RECAP: Pritzker Administration Revises Standards with Rules
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) sets student learning and teacher standards.
September 11, 2020, ISBE publishes notice that they are going to amend the Illinois teacher licensing requirements to be “Culturally Responsive.”
What is a “Culturally Responsive” teacher? The Pritzker Administration initially said such teachers focus on identity politics for curriculum content, and “embrace and encourage progressive viewpoints”:
*In the ed literature, an asset-based approach “views diversity in thought, culture, and traits” as the value students have in the classroom; insists that culture is never a reason why students do poorly in the classroom; and also refuses to assume students “may need to work on or lack“ skills.
